Device Connectivity – The Next Big Wave in Diabetes

The Apple Watch and its operating system iOS 8 holds great promise for people with diabetes when it and the iPhone finally connect wearers to Apple’s Health software. With Android options also rapidly developing, these advances hold great potential for easy passage of diabetes data between devices so it can benefit people with diabetes and their health care providers. The question we really want answered is when will the meter, pump and CGM talk to each other?

Asante Snap

Asante Snap Insulin Pump

The Asante Snap began to ship in April of 2013, two years after receiving FDA approval. The Snap is being rolled out by region, starting in the Northeast US, with gradual availability to other regions. This allows Asante to build up their sales and service network (Similar to Insulet’s rollout of the Omnipod). Asante has focused on ease of pump use and highlights how easy it is to use the Snap pump and change out the cartridge, among other things.

Tidepool - Acquiring, Storing, and Opening Data for Improved Diabetes Care

Who does your diabetes data belong to? You - obviously. You're the one who created it and needs it for diabetes management. Medtronic 530g with Enlite

The FDA approved the Medtronic MiniMed 530G insulin pump with its display of the Enlite continuous glucose monitor in September, 2013. The 530G is the first system in the United States that can automatically stop insulin delivery if the CGM's glucose value falls to a preset level (60-90 mg/dl) AND the wearer doesn't respond to the Threshold Suspend Alarm. This functionality puts the device in the newly created OZO: Artificial Pancreas Device Classification created by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Animas Vibe

Animas Vibe Pump in Green

The Animas Vibe is an insulin pump with a built in Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitor. Although there is a pump-only version of the Vibe available, the combination of the pump and monitor are what makes the Vibe stand out. The Vibe, alone, is basically the Animas 2020 pump platform from a few years ago.

The Vibe has been available in the UK since 2011. Johnson & Johnson finally submitted the Animas Vibe to the FDA in April of 2013.

Actual Pump Practices Study

The APP Study was conducted to see how people who have good control really use their pumps and to find what settings give the best glucose results. We analyzed anonymous data from several hundred Deltec Cozmo insulin pumps (Smiths Medical) that were consecutively downloaded during a large, routine software upgrade of all Cozmo pumps in 2007. The pumps were prescribed and used around the U.S. by a wide variety of clinicians and wearers. Insulin dosing was analyzed from a subset of 396 pumps where glucose readings were directly entered from an attached meter.
